A TORNADO STRUCK NORTHERN BOONE AND NORTHWEST MCHENRY COUNTIES MONDAY AFTERNOON. NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS SURVEYED THE DAMAGE TODAY. THE TORNADO WAS RATED EF3 ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE WITH MAXIMUM WINDS OF 136 TO 165 MPH. THE TORNADO HAD A PATH LENGTH OF 13.2 MILES AND A MAXIMUM WIDTH OF AROUND 100 YARDS. THE TORNADO STARTED AT 330 PM ABOUT 1.2 MILES NORTH OF POPLAR GROVE IN BOONE COUNTY AND ENDED AT 348 PM ABOUT 3.2 MILES NORTH NORTHEAST OF HARVARD IN MCHENRY COUNTY. THERE WERE FOUR INJURIES IN BOONE COUNTY AND ONE IN MCHENRY COUNTY. THE FIRST SIGNS OF DAMAGE WERE AT QUAIL TRAP ROAD JUST EAST OF POPLAR GROVE ROAD WHERE TREES WERE DAMAGED AND SECTIONS OF ROOFING WERE REMOVED FROM A SHED. THE TORNADO INTENSIFIED TO EF2 INTENSITY AT EDWARDS APPLE ORCHARD ON CENTERVILLE ROAD. A LARGE BARN WAS DESTROYED AND OTHER BUILDINGS WERE SEVERELY DAMAGED. LARGE TREES WERE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED. THE TORNADO REACHED ITS MAXIMUM INTENSITY OF EF3 AT THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF CENTERVILLE ROAD AND BEAVERTON ROAD. (This is a confirmed tornado: National Weather Service) I started filming to get an image of all the lightning, but then realized there was a black column from the sky down to the water on the left... The Statue of Liberty is barely noticeable directly above the tail end of the Pepsi truck. Notice how fast it all starts moving about a minute in... Then, watch the driving rain on surface of the water. There was a moment of snow that I think is not visible. The waves of what look like fog rolling is actually water in the air. I'm not sure if the building was hit with something... At one point I turn around and try to show the rug is being picked up by the draft from under the door... It's all over in about 4 minutes. |

On Monday afternoon, StormChasingVideo.com Weather Paparazzi Brandon Sullivan was near Tipton, OK where he caught this extraordinary tornado footage. In the start of the video it shows a wide shot of the storm and the tornado on a southward approach to the storm. Brandon zooms into a tight shot of the tornado while he and his chase partners follow the storm. The video then shows a medium to tight shot on a powerful tornado ripping across the ground. This footage shows a text book violent tornado. The footage continues as the tornado travels to the north with both with intense circulation as it traveled across the open country. At one point the large tornado becomes translucent allowing the inner circulation to become apparent. As the tornado moved to the north, it went into the Wichita Mountains in southwest Oklahoma. Brandon tried to keep up with the tornado and in the end of the footage it is from his a GoPro camera mounted on the hood of his truck with a wide angle point of view as he approached the large tornado. Live TV footage of violent tornado in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on April 27, 2011. The tornado caused extensive damage beginning in the Southwest part of Tuscaloosa and tracked Northeast into a heavily populated section of Tuscaloosa missing The University of Alabama campus by only a few hundred yards. This tornado ranks as the deadliest in Alabama history with over 65 confirmed fatalities in its 80 mile track from Southwest of Tuscaloosa to just Northeast of downtown Birmingham. This tornado injured over 1000 people in its path and there are still people unaccounted for. Recovery and rebuilding will surely take years. As of 5/2/2011, this tornado was rated as EF-4 on the enhanced Fujita scale with sustained winds of between 165 - 200 miles per hour. |
